Everyone knows that social media is absolutely necessary in today’s world. Walking down the street you will notice that 95% of people are glued to their mobile device. The majority of them will be on some form of social media. If you want to keep up you HAVE to be right there with them, walking down the street. Unless you want to be charged with stalking, you might want to use social media to reach them. But you already know this, right?
What you really want to know is what platform is going to be the most effective. How do you know which ones are going to have the biggest impact on your ability to communicate with your customers? Here are a couple things that you need to figure out to know what platform is going to work best.
Who is your target audience?
The first thing you need to figure out is who are you selling to. Older gentlemen, mothers and homemakers, teens? Whoever it is, you need to know so that you can find the perfect social media to reach them. According to Social Media Week the most used social network by people age 18-24 is Snapchat. People who are 65 and older are more likely to be using Facebook. Pew Research Center states that Black and Hispanic demographics are more likely to use Instagram and Twitter than the White demographic. Who you are looking to target is very important so make sure you know what to use to cater directly to them.
What are you selling?
Depending on the product or service that you provide, you will want to use different platforms. Some social media are very visual like Pinterest, Snapchat and Buzzfeed. If what you’re selling is not very visual, you might want to use Twitter or Facebook to get your message across. Is your product something that needs to be explained or displayed? You’ll want to use YouTube to create videos of how your product works. Just like you wouldn’t sell food and manure together, you don’t want to use social media that is not going to compliment your company.
What are your business goals?
As a business, what do you hope to accomplish? Do you want to cause social change, improve your community better, or help to give your employees a better life? Whatever it may be, this too will influence what social media is going to do the best job for you. Search out what platforms are being used the most in your industry by searching out competitors and the networks that are currently being used to communicate messages that are similar to yours. At the same time, don’t be afraid to take chances and find niche social media platforms that no one else has used.
